The Mussel & Steak Bar

The Mussel & Steak Bar nessled in Edinburgh’s old town Grassmarket is a fitting location for a restaurant serving locally sourced market produce.

Opened in 2005 by restaurateur Marshall Milne, this small independent restaurant has been a firm favourite for over 16 years with visitors and Scots alike. Inspired by Marshall’s love of fresh food and Scotland, our unique eatery is popular all year round, open seven days a week.

Our menu is based around seafood and steak favourites with clever twists. We serve tempting dishes for lunch and dinner, including kilo pots of irresistible mussels, and matured Scotch beef steaks. Although adapted every month with new dishes, the core of our menu remains from the surf or turf which offers something for everyone.

In our kitchen our chef’s love of delighting palettes, comes from the quality of fresh produce he uses. Every dish is planned and created from scratch and our ingredients sourced from the renowned fish merchants on the west coast of Scotland and award winning farms in the borders and central belt of Scotland. We dry aged our steaks for a minimum of 35 days, serving only the best Scotch Beef.

Our restaurant has no airs or graces, the atmosphere is casual, informal and very welcoming with our focus on serving amazing fresh food. We can catering for large celebrations and groups. In the summer months our popular pavement seating area allows you to soak up the sunshine whilst sipping your chilled wine or beer.

Our wine list is affordable and varied enough for everyone’s palate, working with small independent wine merchants to bring to your table some great wines and unusual spirits.

“So tasty!

Not my first trip here, and it won’t be my last, the kitchens and the staff didn’t disappoint, food was amazing. Thank you.”

“Five Star Service!

My wife and I went here for lunch meat the end of October. We both choose the Haggis Wellington and had Mussels in white wine and burger. The Haggis Wellington was amazing and I was tempted to fight my wife for her plate it was so good. Main meal portion sizes were excellent and both dishes were great. Service was faultless and we are already planning on going again.”

“Mussel house!

If you really love mussels this is the place. In the central of the town, small, clean and tidy. Service is quick and friendly. Seafood dishes are up to the standard.”
