The Mussel & Steak Bar

The Mussel & Steak Bar nessled in Edinburgh’s old town Grassmarket is a fitting location for a restaurant serving locally sourced market produce.

Opened in 2005 by restaurateur Marshall Milne, this small independent restaurant has been a firm favourite for over 16 years with visitors and Scots alike. Inspired by Marshall’s love of fresh food and Scotland, our unique eatery is popular all year round.

Our menu is based around seafood and steak favourites with clever twists. We serve tempting dishes for lunch and dinner, including kilo pots of irresistible mussels, and matured Scotch beef steaks. Although adapted every month with new dishes, the core of our menu remains from the surf or turf which offers something for everyone.

In our kitchen our chef’s love of delighting palettes, comes from the quality of fresh produce he uses. Every dish is planned and created from scratch and our ingredients sourced from the renowned fish merchants on the west coast of Scotland and award winning farms in the borders and central belt of Scotland.

Our restaurant has no airs or graces, the atmosphere is casual, informal and very welcoming with our focus on serving amazing fresh food. We can catering for large celebrations and groups. In the summer months our popular pavement seating area allows you to soak up the sunshine whilst sipping your chilled wine or beer.

Our wine list is affordable and varied enough for everyone’s palate, working with small independent wine merchants to bring to your table some great wines and local whiskys..

Oysters

We serve Pacific Oysters, farmed in Scottish sea-water lochs, which have an unparalleled water quality.

Oysters are well known for their aphrodisiac properties, however they have many health benefits as well. They contain many essential vitamins and minerals, which can help with weight loss, increase bone strength, strengthen heart muscles and boost the immune system.

We serve our oysters fresh with red wine and shallot vinaigrette, lemon and rye bred or cooked in garlic, herbs and butter.

Mussels

We serve Scottish rope grown mussels sourced from Shetland. They are grown on suspended ropes and feed from the natural sources of the sea. They have a low carbon footprint and they are ecologically friendly and easy to farm sustainably.

Mussels are a nutritious and healthy food, high in protein, iron, vitamin A and B12 and also low in fat. It is also incredibly rich in Omega-3 and improves circulatory health, while maintaining good energy levels.

We serve our kilo pot of mussels au natural or in 3 different sauces: chilli & garlic; white wine, shallotts and cream; and in whisky, smoked bacon and cream.

OCTOBER 2019

My partner and I came for a valentine's dinner and it was simply sublime. I had the surf and turf and was astonished by the portion size, almost half a kilo of beautiful fresh mussels in a gorgeous white wine, cream and shallot sauce, two huge and delicious crevettes and a phenomenal 8oz ribeye that was cooked to perfection. My partner had a kilo of mussels and she was delighted with her meal too!

To start, we had queen scallops to share and these were beautifully presented and delicious. We were also given a complimentary oyster each which was really appreciated.

Our servers were attentive and lovely and we both thought the decor and atmosphere was spot on.

All in all, one of our favourite meals we've ever had. Thank you!

FEBRUARY 2022
